Global Megatrends in Cybersecurity

Cyberattack is becoming more and more difficult to stop. Companies all over the globe have found themselves in a whirlwind of stress over potential cyberattack. Most of us know about the huge companies that have been hit by cybercrime, but the trend isn’t moving in the right direction. As information security changes, as do the criminals.

Ponemon recently did a study that surveyed more than 1,100 senior information technology practitioners in the US, Europe, and the Middle East/North Africa. Here is a few highlights of what Ponemon Institute found in the 2018 Study on Global Megatrends in Cybersecurity.

The IoT (Internet of Things) is a vulnerability.

Within the survey, 82% of those studied predict that unsecured IoT devices will likely cause a data breach. 80% of those people feel that the breach could be catastrophic to the company as a whole.

Ransomware is on the Rise, and Confidence isn’t

Amongst the 1,100 surveyed 67% believe cyber extortion or ransomware will increase in frequency and payout. Less than half of IT security practitioners surveyed believe they can protect their organization from cyberthreat.

Leadership is Not Being Briefed

You’d think that with all this talk of threat and data siege, that executives and corporate leaders would be well aware of what is going on in the IT department when it comes to security. According to this study, that’s not the case. Only 36% of respondents said their senior leadership saw cybersecurity as a strategic priority. 68% of those surveyed said their boards of directors are not being briefed on what’s being done to prevent the attacks.

You can take a look at the full report here, to learn more about the study. The bottom line is this, your company leadership NEEDS to be made aware of the looming threat of cyberattack. Money and resources NEED to be dedicated to protecting the data and vital information held within the confines of your network. There’s a laundry list of potential threats that could come down the pipeline, and if you’re not prepared, you’ll lose out.
